Building a Positive Self Image Starts With You.

How do you see yourself? That is one of the most important questions that a person can ask themself. We are all have a mental picture of who we are, what we look like and what our talents are.  Our lives and everyday experiences help shape how we view ourselves and that is what is called a self image. Our self image contributes to our self esteem which is how we feel about ourselves.

Building a Positive Self ImageThis is why it is so important to have a positive self image. If you view yourself in a positive way, you will feel better about yourself and that will reflect in the way that you live your life. There are ways to build a positive self image because sometimes lets face it its easier said than done.

The most important thing to remember is that you are enough. The media can show an unrealistic picture of how people should look or act and you may feel like you have to live up to that standard. Understanding that you are unique and that you are enough just as you are is the first step to building a positive self image.

The next thing to remember is that you have people who care about you and accept you. Your family and friends love you just the way you are and want you to be happy and grow up strong. That is just as important to them as it is to you.

Building a Positive Self ImageBuilding a positive self images means understanding who you are. What do you like ? Do you like to read? Do you like to draw? Do you like to sing? Think of your talents, your strengths and your dreams and use those to help you develop your sense of self.

There are even clubs and programs that you can get involved in so you can get a sense of community and a place to make friends. Organizations like Girls in Power bring girls together in an environment that builds self esteem and prepares girls for their futures.

Girls in Power offers programs that discuss body images and how to develop a healthy lifestyle as well as learning about the negative effects of low self esteem. How we view ourselves plays a major role in not just how we treat ourselves but in how we treat others.

Creating a Strong Foundation to Face Life’s Challenges

Have you ever felt like you’ve had a strong foundation in life only to see it crumble away when challenging times arrive? Really? Yeah, me too. Although, it’s nothing we can’t learn to fix together. We just need to better understand how to build a strong foundation that can stand the test of multiple hardships.

In the G.I.P. curriculum, G.I.P founder Melinda Rae teaches us how we can better prepare building lifeourselves for facing these difficult times by learning how to place big rocks first to create a sturdy and strong foundation.

What Do You Mean By “Big Rocks”?

Well… big rocks… literally, like the ones you pick up at the river or on the beach. These are the type of rocks that stay in their current position for a long time. They aren’t bothered by the rain, wind, or snow. They are strong enough to face the challenges mother earth throws at them while they continue on living their awesome rock life.

How Do I Build a Strong Foundation?

Melinda uses the cool metaphor of rocks in a jar to demonstrate how a strong foundation strgfoundationworks and how we can learn to create one. She says that “life is like a jar of rocks” and that once we know how to put each item in its correct place, we can then handle most anything life throws at us. Melinda believes the jar contains four items and describes what each of them represents to give us a better understanding of her metaphor. Below is how she describes them:

  • Jar: This is you
  • Rocks: The most important things in your life
  • Pebbles: Important things, but things you can live without if you had to
  • Sand: Things you just like to do that usually take time from the important things
  • Water: God, who holds us all together  

Now that we know what each item represents, we can take a few moments to discover what each one represents to us individually. We can even write them down on a piece of paper so we don’t forget. I’ll do it with you too. Don’t worry, I don’t mind waiting. I’ll be here when you get back. Go ahead, think away… got it? Ok, good.

FoundationOnce we have taken this time to identify what each item represents to us, we can then start to place them inside of the jar. Melinda says we need to make sure that our “big rocks are laid down first… and the little pebbles are on top.” The reason for this is because if we put the sand or pebbles at the bottom of our jar, the weight of our big rocks will cause the foundation to move and eventually fall apart. But if we place the big rocks at the bottom they will stay firmly in place to create a strong foundation because the pressure from the pebbles and sand isn’t strong enough to make our big rocks move.

Melinda says that “learning to place ‘big rocks’ in the Jar first will give you a strong foundation. Having a strong foundation and not one made of ‘sand’ will assist you during challenging times.” So, the next time you feel like your foundation is crumbling, think about what you’ve identified here today as your “big rocks” and see if they are in place as your foundation. If you have accidentally placed sand or pebbles as your foundation, no worries, all you need to do is a little adjusting. Once you put those study rocks at the bottom of the jar, you will be able to make it through the many challenges life may throw your way because you have built yourself a strong foundation.

The Importance Of Setting Boundaries And Limits With The People In Your Life

Occasionally, people in our life, like friends and family, will get a little closer than we’d like them to, and this may make us feel uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable in any given situation usually makes us feel some type of negative emotion like anxiety, self-doubt, or even fear. And I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling uncomfortable it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

To avoid these particular situations in the future, it’s important for us to remember to set boundaries and limits with those around us. In the G.I.P program, Melinda Rae, teaches us about the benefits setting boundaries and limits may have on our personal relationships.

What Are Boundaries?

setting boundaries and limitsGood Question! Melinda describes boundaries as “imaginary lines that help you protect yourself both physically and emotionally.” That’s a pretty cool way of thinking about it, don’t you think? Imaginary lines?

So the next time we feel emotionally or physically uncomfortable in a situation, let’s try and picture these imaginary lines Melinda is talking about. It’s a handy tool to have because it helps to keep us safe and protected from the unwanted situations people may put us in.

How Do I Develop Limits And Boundaries?

Well, I’m glad you asked! The best way to start setting boundaries and limits is to become self-aware; be aware of how you feel every day. Melinda says, in the G.I.P curriculum, that it’s important for you to “evaluate yourself and your relationships; identify changes you can make which will make you feel respected.”

What does this mean? Well, it means that we need to try and notice when we’re feeling or starting to feel uncomfortable. Next time we notice ourselves feeling uncomfortable, let’s think about what caused us to feel this way and why. If the people around us are causing us discomfort, then we know it’s time to start setting boundaries and limits with them.

setting boundaries and limitsFor example, some of my friends and family, well… let’s just say they can be a little nosy at times. They want to know certain things about my life which I’d rather not share, and it makes me feel uncomfortable when they ask about it. So, you know what I did? Yeah, you got it. I set some boundaries and limits!

Remember, we don’t have to be rude when setting boundaries and limits, but sometimes we do have to remind people of them when they forget. And if our friends and family have a hard time remembering, we can politely say, “remember those boundaries we talked about?” Communicating clearly with your friends and family helps to keep your boundaries stable and firmly in place. Don’t let anyone change your limits and boundaries without your permission. You are the only one who can change them.

Why Are Setting Boundaries And Limits So Important?

Well, basically they help improve the quality of our life. Who doesn’t want that, right? Having a high quality of life means that we are going to be living in a way that’s more fun and enjoyable for us.

You might be curious about how setting boundaries and limits helps to improve the quality of our life. Essentially, they help eliminate all the things we don’t like other people to do or say to us. Melinda says it best when she states that they work to “keep the actions and behaviors of others from: hurting, distracting, annoying, or imposing on you.” Not a bad idea, huh?

The next time a friend or family member makes you feel uncomfortable, try to remember what we talked about here today. Communicate with them about how you’re feeling and let them know which boundaries and limits you wish to start setting with them. Moms Experiencing Radical Change With Melinda Rae

The Girls in Power “programs” have touched the lives of many young girls, women and parents.

Struggling as a teen, I desired to “feel heard and matter” to the world and others around me. I desired to change my negative thinking, worry, and regret, feelings of shame and worthlessness; after so many years of poor decision making, failed relationships, afflictions and internal struggles.

My quest of re-programming my negative thinking, calming my spirit and desiring to love myself, accept myself and to connect to my purpose was the path that lead me to delivering the Girls in Power workshop series to young girls. The idea of adding “Mothers” to this picture filled me with more hope; as I believe if Mothers were to experience the Girls in Power workshops; then true and permanent transformation would take place and new and strong bonds would be formed.

This past spring, that is exactly what happened. Moms experienced radical change; transforming the way they handled life and how they experienced their loving and supportive bond with their daughters.

Mom’s completed the program with saying, “I had a major transformation; I feel equipped now, happy to start my day with joy and excitement as well as beginning to see new possibilities.” Mom’s stated, “My relationship with my daughter blossomed and we share a new special bond.”Talking Stick

Additionally, parents felt, relief and a new sense of confidence in their daughters and of their own ability to parent with love, faith and positive solutions.” We have witnessed changed attitudes and grateful hearts filled with peace and contentment.

While doing so, Jennifer spent 10 years training under the nationally recognized, top HapKiDo instructor in the country, Sabumnim David Herbert (7th Dan) in NYC. She also holds a black belt in VSK Jujitsu, after working with the martial arts Hall-of-Famer Soke Lil’ John Davis. All of this training sparked a deep sense of strength, determination and empowerment in her that she now wishes to share with others.

She conducts Stilettos and Self Defense seminars, and has created the popular Stilettos and Self Defense DVD series. Joint Venture Empowers Community Members in Conejo Valley

What a difference a year makes.

A year ago I was getting ready to launch Girls in Power workshops at the Conejo Valley YMCA. Our success with equipping girls and mothers with self-value, self-respect and empowerment was possible because of that partnership. YMCA helped Girls in Power lay a strong foundation in 2012 by allowing us to use their facility to operate our flagship “Program” for girls’ ages 8-16 years old.

Today, I rejoice with announcing the partnership between YogaWorks of Westlake Village, CA and Girls in Power.

mike-yogaworksAfter sitting down with the President/CEO Phil Swain and RVP Mike Leonard and sharing the Girls in Power vision and mission it became apparent we would be able to expand our reach by offering more workshops per week and have the ability to serve more girls and families.

Many women have asked me when I will have a program for the “big girls?” GIP recognizes the need for all people to have access to the Girls in Power programming. My wish has always been to have the ability to provide more services to our community with the possibility of national expansion. YogaWorks has made that possible. YogaWorks has provided the space to run girl’s workshops, women workshops and parent workshops. We are excited to announce on March 17, Girls in Power will launch tween workshops for girls ages 9-12 and parent workshops; open to parents of pre-teen and teen-aged daughters. In April, Girls in Power for Women will launch Let’s Talk: Inspire the Girl Inside” skill-building workshops to help women connect with their hearts and find inner strength to develop their own identity, inspirations, and passions.”

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Do you dream? I mean, do you imagine what you want to be in life?

When someone asks you, “What do you want to be when you grow up,” do you answer honestly, or do you tell them what you think is appropriate?

When I get asked, “Melinda Rae, what do you want to be when you grow up, I say, I want to be a ‘Rockstar’.” This does not mean, I literally want to be on a stage with a guitar, singing and thrashing my head around. Rather, this means I want to SHINE and do amazing things in my life. I want to be BIG and make a dent in our universe. I want be my BEST and feel like a bright STAR in my life; feeling capable, empowering and inspiring others.

Using moments to dream, imagine and the time to allow yourself to desire grand and big hopes and passions are all important to living with satisfaction and joy.

If you focus on what you feel like you have failed at, a failed marriage, a failed relationship, or you focus on your losses or a lost job, then those will be the things you continue to attract. So rather than focusing on the negative, focus on the positive and on your dreams.

You were created with a wonderful imagination. Begin to allow yourself to use your imagination to illuminate your goals and desires; therefore you will bring your dreams into your reality.

I often teach and use a popular template, S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) as a starting point with goal setting. I add an “I” for inspiration and make sure my goal is relevant and is inspiring to me.

I incorporate using language that is inspiring and motivating!

Your goal should have intention and express who you are, rather than a mindset of “fixing” something. I found when I first allowed myself to dream “BIG” and I allowed myself to be deserving. I was really helping myself achieve “my dreams.”

There is a purpose to clarifying all the factors that play a role in the attainment of your goal right from the start. Your chances of success are increased because once you are clear about what we want to achieve, then you are already half-way to achieving it.

In Empower Your Girl I share, “Turning your vision into reality, overcoming your difficult circumstances, or finding your purpose depends on learning how to make the best of your life in every moment and to focus on attracting the things you want in life; however I find when I take my goals, vision and mission and create a vision board using it every day, to attract the things I DO want in my life I attain everything I believe in and I desire. Do you want to take the next step? If so, manifest what want you dream, desire, want and crave by creating a vision board” (Crown, 2012). Empower Your Girl

Directions to create a vision board:
1. “What is” a Vision Board (see my example).

2. Use images, scriptures, words which have special and intentional/purposeful meaning or lists be used?
3. Begin with your S.M.A.R.T. I. template, Personal Goal Sheet/Daily Habits (covered in my book, Empower Your Girl) and Wheel of Life/a wheel of your priorities.
4. Look through magazines, color, draw, write and glue your images down on poster board at least 11 x 14 size.
5. Add goals, mission and create your vision on a board.
6. Use your Daily Habit List to help you each day feel a sense of accomplishment , place your vision board where you can see it, take a picture of it and place on your phone/screen saver and review your board consistently.

“The idea behind this is, I found when I surround myself with images of want I want to become, what I want to have and do, where I want to live, or where I want to vacation, my life changes to match those images and those desires. You will find that what you focus on will expand. I use the law of attraction, along with prayer and petition, thankfulness and gratitude, living in the moment and accepting myself, to attract my desires and turn them into reality” (Crown, 2012).

I use my mission, vision, priorities wheel, daily habits to create a vision board and I place it in my home where I see it every day; use this board to guide your life in a positive direction.

When I visualize and focus on the goals I set for myself on a regular basis, all comes to pass.

Put what you want to happen in your life, front of your mind.

Finding Joy and Satisfaction in Daily Living

Finding joy and satisfaction in daily living helps me feel fulfilled, peace and zest each day. You are promised a full and satisfied life.

In my book, Empower Your Girl, I share tips and tools on how to find satisfaction and joy in your daily life.

Do you find yourself thinking, “I am not satisfied, I missed an opportunity, I lost my dream or my dreams have passed me by?”

If you are not happy, and have feelings overwhelming you; distracted, unfulfilled then consider the options you have. It is your choice and you can make the change; it is your choice on how you create more time, more space, more fulfillment, more focus, more energy, and more peace. Taking back control of your calendar or agenda, creating space and margins to rest and be still will all lead you to feeling more energy and engaged with things which make you feel alive and at peace” (Crown, 2012).

Empower Your Girl shares one tool I use to find my joy and satisfaction, daily, by evaluating and reviewing my life priorities, using a “Wheel of Life.”

This is a template used by many as is a model, which helps me stay in the moment by knowing what my priorities are; ultimately helping me live with intention in everything I do. I found it gave me a quick and easy way to graphically identify the areas in my life to of which I want to devote more energy to, and help me understand where I might want to cut back. My wheel of life empowers me to stay focused and not get “off balance,” continue to develop awareness of important areas, reduce stress and frustration. You ultimately have to have a reason to get out of bed every morning. You need to have dreams, visions and hopes. By taking the time to evaluate your life as it is, reviewing how you spend your time daily will illuminate if your priorities are congruent with your goals and dreams.

Staying productive is good, but what you do, is more important and a key element to finding joy. Keeping active is great, but ensuring your on track to achieving your goals is crucial and vital to you finding joy and satisfaction.

Melinda’s “Top Secret” No. 1

Each morning, before I start worrying about my day and my “to do list” or looking at my phone and computer I grab my cup of coffee and grab my devotionals.

I use Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling and Joel Osteen’s Your Best Life each morning.

Starting my day with being still, filling my mind with positive ideas, refreshing wise words, and faith of possibilities, help me at a foundational level.

Sometimes the devotion gives me the focus I need or a reminder that God is with me. Sometimes I connect with scripture or a call to action of thankfulness and gratefulness. Whatever the message for the day is…I am stepping out in the world with a positive frame of mind, a positive spirit and a hope for my future.
